OUR STORY
Shave ice tastes better when enjoyed with family & friends!
Shave ice was brought to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The original Japanese version, called kakigori, dates back to the Heian Period (794–1185 AD), when blocks of ice were shaved by hand and served with sweet syrup.
When Japanese workers came to Hawaii to work on sugar plantations, they brought this refreshing dessert tradition with them. However, unlike the Japanese kakigori, which was usually topped with traditional flavors like green tea or azuki beans, Hawaiian shave ice evolved to include tropical flavors like pineapple, coconut, and mango. Over time, it became a favorite across cultures in Hawaii.
Today, shave ice is known for its finely shaved, fluffy ice and its rainbow of vibrant syrups and toppings like sweetened condensed milk or even a scoop of ice cream at the base. Shave ice is a favorite, iconic treat in the Hawaiian islands.
Angela, Hapa Shave Ice co-owner, was born and raised in Hawaii and fondly remembers living just steps away from the best shave ice shop on Oahu. She grew up on delicious shave ice. When Angela moved to Kenya in 2010, one of the first things she was surprised to find was how much in common there was with her home state. From lychee, to mango, to pineapple and more, the tropical fruit in Kenya reminded her of home. And when the blazing hot December sun arrived, she craved her childhood cold treat, shave ice! She dreamed of a day when she could share shave ice with friends in Kenya.
Finally—nearly 15 years later—Angela’s dream is a reality! With her husband Laban at her side and two little shave ice lovers, Dedan and Aya in tow, the Okune family is so excited to share a taste of Hawaii with Kenya.
